Thriller at Woburn

When we launched our Linksnet Bushnell Matchplay Pairs tournament last summer, we never expected that it would take nearly a year to complete, but thanks to local lockdowns followed by national lockdowns, our three ‘semi-finalists’ had to sit tight for months on end.

The decision was taken to cancel the eliminator round given courses couldn’t open until the end of March, and instead change what was going to be a matchplay Final into a three team betterball pairs Stableford Final on the stunning Duchess Course at Woburn Golf Club.

All three pairs had worked hard to get to this stage over the previous 11 months and everyone was eager to perform well on the day in the hope they could be crowned our inaugural champions!

The addition of live scoring added to the excitement as the lead changed hands multiple times over the afternoon and the challenge of the picturesque tree-lined fairways made the Final even more nerve-jangling!

It went right to the wire, with Ingestre Park’s Kevin Raybould and Andrew Brown waiting around the 18th green having completed a round of 40 points knowing that an up and down for par on the last from the pair of Carl Greenwood and Rob Wilmington would snatch a victory for the Portal pair! As it turned out neither Carl nor Rob could quite manage it and despite scoring 40 points themselves and leading for most of the back nine they missed out on a countback. So congratulations to Kevin and Andrew, our very first Linksnet Bushnell Pairs Winners!

Meanwhile our 3rd place went to Simon Stern and Michael Green who scored a very creditable 38 points which wasn’t quite enough on the day although to finish 3rd in a nationwide tournament was a very good showing. All three pairs took home fantastic prizes from our sponsor Bushnell. All thoughts now turn to our Season 2 Linksnet Bushnell Matchplay Pairs with pre-registration now closing on Sunday 6 June and the first round due to start on Monday 21 June.

To register, your pair must be both either a Birdie or Eagle member. Email your name, partner’s name and golf club to support@linksnetgolf.com
